STEAMBOAT STOPPING AT KANSAS CITY FOR VIP PASSENGER...It was the summer of 1987 and Sherri Smith had booked passage on an unscheduled riverboat headed down the wide Missouri for New Orleans. Sherri was dismayed and full of sorrow as the stern-wheeler steamed on by. Guests onboard were waving and shouting at her. She tried to get the word to the Captain that she was supposed to board. Evidently, their passenger list didn't include one Ms Sherri Smith and she ended up taking a Greyhound bus. The last I heard, she won an enormous lawsuit for thousands of dollars and eventually opened a bar in the French Quarter. Photo by Dennis Hodges

BOY ON SCHWINN BIKE DELIVERING PAPERS 1955

ONE OF MY FIRST "REAL JOBS" WAS A PAPER ROUTE IN EARLY FIFTIES. AT AGE 12, I WAS DELIVERING RX PRESCRIPTIONS FROM THE HALL DRUG STORE ON MY BIKE. IT WAS AN EVENING JOB, FROM ABOUT 6PM UNTIL MIDNIGHT. THERE WAS NO LIMIT TO THE RADIUS IN MOST CASES. A FIFTY-CENT TIP WAS CONSIDERED GOOD FORTUNE. I LATER BECAME A SODA JERK FOR THE SAME DRUG STORE AND MADE THOUSANDS OF MALTS AND SHAKES IN THOSE CHROME CONTAINERS WITH THE GREEN CERAMIC ARMS. CHERRY COKES AND LEMON COKES WERE HOT. SOME OF THE GIRLS WERE PRETTY HOT TOO; I RARELY HAD TO MIX THE MALTS WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE OR TWO PRETTY YOUNG LADIES SWEET TALKING ME FOR A FREEBIE. AND THEN,THERE WAS THE SUMMER WHEN SHIRLEY STOPPED IN AND STAYED ALMOST ALL SUMMER. WOW. GREAT MEMORIES. MORE ABOUT THE "LIFE AND TIMES OF A SODA JERK IN THE 1950S" LATER. OR PERHAPS I WILL DO A FEATURE IN A BLOG. SUGGESTIONS? ANY MEMORIES TO SHARE?

LIFE ON THE EDGE, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

In every city in America, there's an edge. There are edges everywhere, some smooth, some rough. Where there's construction happening, there's an additional edge of axiety. There are those who, like hawks, concentrate on the advantages of being on the edge. It's not like a walk down Main Street; it's an area that is as transient as the bus stations, a place where things change every few minutes. Sure, there's much to be said about living on the edge, but living on the edge in today's society is different than it was in the 1950s. Beware of the edge.

INTRODUCING NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ARTISTS
VIEWERS WILL NOTICE A VARIETY OF NEW PHOTOS AND ART ARE BEING FEATURED ON THE PAGES OF THIS ONLINE PHOTO AND ART JOURNAL... Where did these outstanding photos and terrific works of art originate? It's a long story, really. But without going into a lot of long and drawn out details, let me say that I found a new site where there are thousand of fantastic photos and works of art. Here the name and address:

"It's one fantastic gallery, a great site for exposure," stated Dave, a long-time friend whom I met on another gallery site. "You won't be sorry," he told me."You will meet some great people, photographers, artists, people who are really into the arts, people who are into autos, people with interests in all aspects of life." So, it was due to Dave's advice that I joined with the group. Here's my new address:

KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF FREEDOM ALIVE

KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF AMERICA ALIVE BY R.L. HUFFSTUTTER
WHILE DRIVING AROUND A FEW DAYS AGO, I SPOTTED THIS NEON SIGN IN THE WINDOW OF A SMOKE SHOP...
Until that moment, I hadn't really considered smoking as a spiritual choice. Sure, I understand it is not recommended by the Surgeon General and many others in the medical field. I know that if I had never started smoking, I wouldn't begin smoking just for something to do. Most folks don't realize it, but back in the 1940s, ads were published by Camel cigarettes stating that the flavor reached the T-zone. Doctors with stethoscopes and lights on their foreheads smilingly stated that Camels "reach the T-zone." Things have changed. This is one change for the best. Nevertheless, smoking is an American right, so let us not get too uptight about banning smoking everywhere but in our own homes. Let's keep America a great place to enjoy a good smoke whenever and almost anywhere we please. There are laws we must obey; I do not recommend we break those laws. I know that one must be 18 or over to purchase smoking products. I do not recommend anyone smoke. For those of us who have smoked and plan to continue smoking, let us be reasonable and understanding. Let's demonstrate the American spirit...

THE COST OF LIVING IN KANSAS CITY IS VERY REASONABLE; THE DOLLAR CAN BE STRETCHED MUCH LARGER IN THE HEART OF AMERICA THAN IT CAN ON EITHER COAST. PEOPLE LOVE THE ECONOMY HERE. MORE MONEY IN CIRCULATION, HOWEVER, WOULD AFFORD A HIGHER STYLE OF LIVING, BUT PEOPLE ARE GENERALLY PRETTY HAPPY ABOUT EVERYTHING EXCEPT THE PRICE OF GAS. CURRENTLY, IT IS $3.75 AND COMMENT CAN BE HEARD ABOUT WHY IT IS SO DOGGONE HIGH WHEN WE HAVE CONTROL OF THE OILFIELDS IN IRAQ. "WHY DID WE GO OVER THERE ANYWAY?" IS A COMMON QUESTION AT THE PUMPS. MOST FOLKS MUMBLE ABOUT SPENDING TAX DOLLARS ON AN AREA WHERE THE FIGHTING HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND WILL PROBABLY BEGIN AGAIN AS SOON AS OUR TROOPS RETURN. "We'll just have to wait and see," stated Harley Goldstein, an investment broker in diversified stocks and bonds. "I can't believe it,"he continued, "we win an oil war and the gas goes higher."

Once a fancy hotel before the 1920, the Coats House slowly deteriorated until the mid 80s when it was sold and totally refurbished and turned into leased condos and private owned condos. It is in close proximity to many night spots and there's always something happening nearby. It is a classy place and features small businesses and shops inside of the lobby.

KC,THE DOORWAY TO ALL DIRECTIONS...

THE SKYLINE OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI has changed tremendously during the past two decades. It all began in the late 80s with urban renewal. While outlying areas were being razed, the downtown reaped some of the excess energies and built some really fine high-rise buildings of note. Though some might feel that the sight of industry in front of the skyline is not a great picture, it is proof that Kansas City is using all of the cement it can manufacture. And everyone in Kansas City knows that cement has a long history of progress in Kansas City and the Kansas City governments that were once run by the iron hand of one particular mayor in the 1930s through the late 1940s.

KANSAS CITY RESTAURANTS HAVE LONG BEEN ONE REASON FOR CONVENTIONS RETURNING TIME AND AGAIN. ASK ANYONE WHO HAS HAD A KC STEAK...and they will tell you they hope their next convention will be held downtown near the legendary restaurants like the Hereford House. When it comes to shopping, Kansas City has more shoe stores than any city of the same size with the exception of

THE TRAFFIC IN KANSAS CITY IS A BREEZE...not at all like the traffic jams one finds in St.Louis and Atlanta. Here, a light rain has made the streets appear like they have been shined and polished. Nevertheless, Kansas City is a clean and litter-free city. Anyone arrested for being a literbug is given directions out of the city limits after paying a fine.
ALTHOUGH KANSAS CITY ISN'T FAMOUS...for a furniture industry like some of the cities in the Carolinas, there are more rug sales in Kansas City than most metropolitan areas of the same size. There are eleven counties in the so-called Kansas City Metro area. Buses run in almost every direction, making Lawrence, Kansas, home of Kansas University, the terminal westward location. Buses frequently run as far east as Columbia, Missouri, home of Missouri University. Many Kansas Citians possess degrees from either of the universities and play important roles in local industry and government. There are those that boast that Kansas City is one of the smartest metro areas in the United States.

WHILE NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES AND OTHER METRO AREAS frequently find parking a problem, parking is rarely difficult in Kansas City. There are more VWs in Kansas City than any other city except Mexico City. Berlin also has many VWs, but most are older and kept garaged.

LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF AMERICA, cell phones connect easily without a lot of interference from geographical barriers. The Rockies are almost six-hundred miles west and the largest city nearest Kansas City is St.Louis. It's a fact that if you are from Missouri, you either love Kansas City and simply tolerate St.Louis or vice-versa. The only time the two cities were closer than they are now is back in the 80s when the Royals beat the Cardinals in the I-70 Series.

THERE'S A LOT OF ENERGY IN KANSAS CITY. STEAM IS STILL THE BEST WAY TO HEAT THE DOWNTOWN...even the streets are warmed by steam.

Those fortunate enough to live in the lofts of downtown Kansas City located around Broadway and Fifth Street get a bonus perk; the smell of Folgers brewing all night makes waking up in KC Okay. In the photo above, THE FOLGERS COMPANY IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.

THIS IS THE PLACE FOR DRINKING BEER AND MEETING PEOPLE WHO ENJOY THE GLOW OF NEON...especially after the sun goes down.

THE DOORWAY TO A WORLD OF CORN...and various other grains. The elevators must be monitored closely and often to prevent rodents from entering the food supply. And there's the danger of combustion, a condition that has caused a few elevators to implode. To solve these two problems, Kansas City has put the wrecking ball to more than a few grain elevators during the past two decades. Anyone who has seen the choice finish on the razed bricks would want them for use in patio and home construction.
ONCE THE DOORWAY...to the West, Kansas City is now the doorway to all directions. One thing about Kansas City, the heart of America, its doorways are open to all. Kansas City is sometimes considered a city one passes through on the way to the West Coast, or a city one must pass through on the way to Atlanta or Orlando, a city that's tolerated because it's on the map. Detouring around the city is an option, but there's the chance of getting lost in the country. Hey, the traffic in Kansas City is a breeze, not at all like St.Louis or Atlanta.
