STEAMBOAT STOPPING AT KANSAS CITY FOR VIP PASSENGER...It was the summer of 1987 and Sherri Smith had booked passage on an unscheduled riverboat headed down the wide Missouri for New Orleans. Sherri was dismayed and full of sorrow as the stern-wheeler steamed on by. Guests onboard were waving and shouting at her. She tried to get the word to the Captain that she was supposed to board. Evidently, their passenger list didn't include one Ms Sherri Smith and she ended up taking a Greyhound bus. The last I heard, she won an enormous lawsuit for thousands of dollars and eventually opened a bar in the French Quarter. Photo by Dennis Hodges

BOY ON SCHWINN BIKE DELIVERING PAPERS 1955

ONE OF MY FIRST "REAL JOBS" WAS A PAPER ROUTE IN EARLY FIFTIES. AT AGE 12, I WAS DELIVERING RX PRESCRIPTIONS FROM THE HALL DRUG STORE ON MY BIKE. IT WAS AN EVENING JOB, FROM ABOUT 6PM UNTIL MIDNIGHT. THERE WAS NO LIMIT TO THE RADIUS IN MOST CASES. A FIFTY-CENT TIP WAS CONSIDERED GOOD FORTUNE. I LATER BECAME A SODA JERK FOR THE SAME DRUG STORE AND MADE THOUSANDS OF MALTS AND SHAKES IN THOSE CHROME CONTAINERS WITH THE GREEN CERAMIC ARMS. CHERRY COKES AND LEMON COKES WERE HOT. SOME OF THE GIRLS WERE PRETTY HOT TOO; I RARELY HAD TO MIX THE MALTS WITHOUT AT LEAST ONE OR TWO PRETTY YOUNG LADIES SWEET TALKING ME FOR A FREEBIE. AND THEN,THERE WAS THE SUMMER WHEN SHIRLEY STOPPED IN AND STAYED ALMOST ALL SUMMER. WOW. GREAT MEMORIES. MORE ABOUT THE "LIFE AND TIMES OF A SODA JERK IN THE 1950S" LATER. OR PERHAPS I WILL DO A FEATURE IN A BLOG. SUGGESTIONS? ANY MEMORIES TO SHARE?

LIFE ON THE EDGE, KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

In every city in America, there's an edge. There are edges everywhere, some smooth, some rough. Where there's construction happening, there's an additional edge of axiety. There are those who, like hawks, concentrate on the advantages of being on the edge. It's not like a walk down Main Street; it's an area that is as transient as the bus stations, a place where things change every few minutes. Sure, there's much to be said about living on the edge, but living on the edge in today's society is different than it was in the 1950s. Beware of the edge.
